Scripps Canyon, Fri June 27, 2008
I have decided that when it comes to Scripps Canyon, La Jolla Canyon, and visibility, the system is like an hourglass. The full, top end had the bad vis people keep insisting is at the Shores last night. The empty, bottom end represents the clear goodness that we find at Scripps Canyon. Lucky for us, though, someone keeps turning the hourglass over before the Scripps Canyon side can fill up, so the vis there is most of the time pretty darn good.
Last evening was another one of those times when the vis was pretty darn good. It wasprobably in the 15- to 20-foot range. We didn’t see any spaldingi, but we did see a bunch of swell sharks. I think I saw a decent-size school of bait fish on the way out of the canyon, but it was starting to get dark. My light uses 1980’s technology and the dim yellow beam just doesn’t carry that far.
It was cold at depth, but not too cold. I wore my drysuit, and didn’t really need it. I was happy that I was wearing it, though. Heh, heh, heh.
