Scuba Diving in San Diego at Scripps Canyon

I met up with my other dive buddies who seem to have a good handle on the nuisance called ‘work’ since they had already gotten a dive in and reported decent conditions. We geared up quickly and made it through small surf but choppy surface waters. Conditions in the canyon were very pleasing, after the rather suboptimal conditions we had over the last weeks. While the average viz in the canyon was maybe around 15f, there was a spot past fish head where I swear I could light up 45f of canyon. But then again I tend to overestimate at night with my bright light. But viz was good.

We saw the usual cornucopia of life, but moray eels were elusive today, although I looked hard for them. After about 28 minutes in the canyon, I noticed that my buddies had a noticeable tendency to head east towards shallower grounds and since they already had done a dive, that’s what we did.

Back in the parking lot, I conducted an experiment: the objective was to see if you could push a generally peaceful and patient wet suit diver over the edge with comments like: “Don’t you love that icy cold wind coming down the hill, it’s so refreshing?” or “That backup dry suit sure has slightly different buoyancy characteristics than my primary.” The answer is: you get back exactly the smart-ass comments you deserve. I should have known.
