Pipes at San Elijo, Wed Feb 27, 2008
A group of four showed up this morning for a dive at the Pipes. I haven’t dove this site in awhile and was looking forward to exploring a new location. According to the NOAA forecast, wave height has been declining for the last couple days but I had no hopes for a spectacular dive. I would have been happy with “decent”. Waves were about 4 ft, with an occasional 6-footer. MikeĀ lost a fin in the surf and had resigned to doing a one-legged kick back to shore when the fin magically popped up to the surface. Lucky break! There was a noticable alongshore current sweeping us north but we managed to get out to the drop-down point using line-ups. We descended through the pea soup and somehow found each other briefly. My buddy and I lost each other within about a minute. No surprise there considering we couldn’t even see the bottom until we bumped our heads into the sand. Both of us caught a few bugs, but no keepers.
