North Wall, Mon Dec 31, 2007
We had a hard time getting the North Wall lined up because the houses on the hill behind the lifeguard tower were covered in marine layer haze, thus obscuring our normal north-south line-up point. The atmosphere wasn’t the only thing that was hazy this morning. There’s a brown mucky layer clouding up the water, and it didn’t really start clearing up till we had dropped to about 60 ft, at which point I realized we had missed the wall. So we did a brown-water swim over to the north and found the wall pretty quickly. We cruised west until we ran out of wall, hopped over the peninsula and swam back along the Far North Wall. The water was actually pretty clear, although a bit dark at depth. We saw lots of gobies, rockfish and blacksmith, a couple fragile rainbow stars, a little baby hermissenda, a pretty large octopus asleep in his hole, and a pair of large male sheephead that seemed to be cohabitating in the same cave (Who am I to judge?). On the surface I talked to a couple other guys who had just finished up a dive at the Secret Garden and they said the same thing: “Pretty good dive, but bring a light.”
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
